I love saving money by making my own condiments and other delicious things in the kitchen. But what’s even MORE important to me is that what I make is free from toxins and other weird chemicals that seem to be everywhere in the grocery store.

If I’m going to go to the trouble of cooking for my family, I want to feel good about what they’re eating. Our food needs to be delicious AND healthy. That’s where homemade spice blends come to the rescue.

Homemade Seasoned Salt Recipe

Homemade seasoning salt is simply a blend of salt with ingredients from your spice cabinet. It really is an all purpose seasoning.

Not only is homemade seasoned salt delicious, but it’s so easy and fast to make it yourself! This is a kitchen essential that you should learn how to make, because the store bought varieties are often full of harmful ingredients.

Ingredients for homemade seasoned salt sitting on a kitchen counter. Ingredients are sea salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. They are sitting next to a white coffee bean grinder and a silver teaspoon.

Ingredients

Salt – Use a good, fine sea salt or kosher salt. I like to use Redmond Real Salt, but you can also use Celtic Sea Salt, Himalayan Pink Salt, Black Lava Sea Salt, or another salt that you enjoy.

Pepper – Freshly ground black pepper adds the spice. Use organic peppercorns when you can. Did you know that pepper is a medicinal spice? It’s an antioxidant and also anti-inflammatory!

Onion powder – Ground onion powder adds a delicious flavor to your seasoned salt. Use organic onion powder if you can. Onions are also full of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Garlic powder – Ground garlic powder will add a bit of heat, plus it’s a delicious medicinal spice that will help boost your immunity.

Paprika powder – Ground paprika adds the red color (and delicious flavor) that you see in other seasoned salts. It is also full of antioxidants and helps aid your digestion and circulation. It’s another anti-inflammatory medicinal spice you should add to your seasoning blend.

Tools You May Need

Coffee or spice grinder  or food processor – I have and use my coffee bean grinder for both spices and coffee beans in my kitchen. You may want to keep two separate mills, though. One for your coffee beans, and one for your spices.

Small glass cooking bowls – You don’t need to measure out your spices in separate bowls as I have done, but it is helpful to open your spice grinder over a bowl to catch all the seasoning.

Glass jar or shaker bottle – I repurpose small, glass jars all the time for my seasoning blends. Use what you have on hand that will make it easy for you to add your seasoned salt when you’re cooking. If you want to get fancy, these glass shaker bottles are neat.

How to Make Homemade Seasoned Salt

Get out all your ingredients and your spice or coffee grinder. I’m sharing my basic recipe, but you have the freedom and flexibility to add more or less of each ingredient so it’s something you and your family enjoy.

This is so easy and fast to make.

Small, glass bowls of onion powder, garlic powder, and red paprika next to a coffee grinder on a kitchen counter.

In your coffee or spice grinder, add a quarter cup of salt and one tablespoon of black pepper. Then add one tablespoon of onion powder, one tablespoon of garlic powder, and one tablespoon of paprika.

Put the lid on your spice grinder, and grind all the spices together until they are fine and combined.

Helpful Tip: Open the lid of your spice grinder over a small bowl so that you can catch the delicious seasoning blend. Also, make sure you clean your grinder well afterward, so that your coffee (if you’re using the same grinder for coffee beans) doesn’t taste salty or off-flavored.

If you are on a medically restrictive diet and need to be careful about the amount of salt you consume, cut the amount of salt by half.

And that’s it! Put your homemade seasoned salt mixture into a separate bowl, jar with a tight fitting lid, or other airtight container. Store it close to your stove so that you can reach for it the next time you want to add some zing to your cooking.

You can also add other spices and herbs to your blend to achieve different flavors. Celery seed, turmeric, and if you like heat…cayenne pepper are popular additions.

How to Use Your Seasoned Salt

You have options when it comes to using your delicious, homemade seasoned salt. Use it in your favorite recipes in the place of salt. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it.

French fries – I don’t really fry that many foods, so “french fries” is a bit of a misnomer. However, I do like to make baked wedge fries from potato wedges. Seasoned salt goes well on them if you want to take the flavor up a notch.

Mashed potatoes – I love making creamy mashed potatoes. Add this seasoned salt to your next batch of mashed potatoes…it’s delicious!

Chicken – It’s a great thing to change up how you season your chicken breasts and chicken thighs every once in a while. For extra flavor on sometimes bland chicken, use your own seasoning mix.

Pork – Use your homemade seasoning blends on a pork chop, pork tenderloin, and even pork roast for a ton of flavor.

Vegetables – Use your unique seasoned salt to add interest and season foods like sauteed and roasted vegetables.

Eggs – Adding your homemade version salt blend can take your eggs from boring to flavorful. Most of the time I simply add salt and pepper to our fried eggs, scrambled eggs, and deviled eggs, but that can get pretty boring after a while. I’ve been adding this homemade seasoned salt a lot lately to make eggs egg-citing again. Ahem.

Soups and stews – Instead of plain salt, use your seasoned salt to give soup and stew a punch.

Rice – Give your rice a flavor boost with homemade seasoned salt.

Grilled meats and fish – Use your seasoning blend for your next barbecue.

Salad dressing – Make uniquely flavored salad dressing with your salt mix.

Most Important Tips

Never add wet spices or herbs to your grinder or else it will turn your seasoning blend into mush. That’s not very helpful if you need to sprinkle it onto your food. It will also make your blend go bad and possibly develop mold.
