I love healthy smoothie recipes. Whether it’s a busy morning or a lazy day, smoothies are a great drink option to support healthy eating and drinking. I’m going to cover the easiest berry smoothies that my family enjoys. From sweet strawberries to tart blueberries, not only will these smoothies quench your thirst and cool you down on hot days, it’s also a sneaky way to get healthy ingredients into the kids’ diet! Other refreshing drink recipes to try are southern peach tea, ice cold blackberry tea, and sweet honey lemonade.

Smoothies are simple and fast to make. It’s also easy to sneak in extra healthy ingredients that the kids won’t notice, which is why I love making them.

It’s also a great option for kids who have just had their wisdom teeth extracted. That first week is really painful, and cold smoothies are easy to “eat,” refreshing, and filling. Just be sure not to add a straw since that’s not allowed during the recovery period.

Making nutrient-dense smoothies can be a delicious part of your day. It feels like a treat, but brings health to your body. I also like that they’re fun to drink.

Fruit – You can use any of your favorite fruits in smoothie recipes. My favorites are bananas, strawberries, and blueberries. But you can customize the recipe to use your favorite fruit. To help fit organic fruit into our family grocery budget, I like to buy produce in bulk and freeze them in smaller, more usable freezer bags. Superfoods – Sneaking in superfoods like freshly ground flax seeds, chia seeds, spinach or kale, and almonds or Brazil nuts will make your smoothies extra nutritious.

Liquids – You can use plain water to make your smoothie. However, milk or yogurt will make it creamier. If you’re on a Daniel Fast or don’t want to consume dairy products, I’ve also used homemade unsweetened apple juice (made from apple scraps) with tasty results. You can even use bone broth!

How to Make Healthy Smoothie Recipes

Make healthy smoothie recipes with fresh or frozen fruit, superfoods like seeds and nuts, and healthy liquids blended up. Customization is key to making it work for your family.

I don’t measure any ingredients when I make smoothies. Eyeballing it is always good enough.

I’ll share my family’s top three favorite smoothie recipes below.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

To make a delicious strawberry banana smoothie, you’ll need fresh or frozen strawberries, fresh or frozen banana, cooked oatmeal (optional), and freshly ground flax seeds (optional). I prefer using frozen berries because I don’t need to add ice later.

I don’t measure anything, but I use approximately a cup of frozen strawberries, half a banana, 1/4 cup of cooked oatmeal, a tablespoon or two of flax seeds, and a cup of milk.

The cooked oatmeal helps the smoothie fill you up. The flax seeds add an extra boost of fiber.

The liquid you choose is up to you. We like adding milk to our smoothies, but you can add yogurt, milk kefir, plain water, nut milks, and even fruit juice.

If you’re adding seeds or nuts, be sure to grind them up first. My coffee bean grinder doubles as a flax seed grinder when I make smoothies.

It’s a bit tedious to clean it out every time I switch between coffee beans and seeds or nuts, but I don’t mind. Some people find it easier to just keep a second coffee bean grinder for their non-coffee-bean needs.

Add all the ingredients to a high speed blender.

It doesn’t take very long to blend it all together. If your smoothie gets too thick to blend easily, simply add more of your liquid and blend it again.

This strawberry banana smoothie is always a crowd pleaser. Add a fun straw like these bamboo straws or stainless steel, glass, or silicone straws.

It’s best to serve smoothies immediately, but you can also keep them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve them.

Blueberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients to make a blueberry banana smoothie including a half banana, frozen blueberries, cooked oatmeal, ground flax seeds, and a cup of milk.

For a great blueberry banana smoothie, simply combine one cup of frozen blueberries, half a banana, 1/4 cup of cooked oatmeal (optional), a cup of milk, and a tablespoon or two of ground flax seeds (optional).

Blend it all together in a high speed blender.

Berry Blast Smoothie Recipe

For another delightful variation, add a mixture of frozen blueberries and strawberries, banana, oatmeal, ground flax seeds, and milk.

Blend it all together in a high speed blender, and serve!

Recipe Variations

  • Add or delete any fruits, seeds, nuts, or herbs. You can also sneak in vegetables like cauliflower, spinach, or kale to give smoothies a nutrient boost.

Meals After Wisdom Teeth Extractions

  • If you're serving smoothies to someone who just had their wisdom teeth removed, do not provide a straw. Straws are not allowed during the recovery period.
